KB442534: In MicroStrategy Web, a Transaction Services text box inside a Document shows the value ‘(NULL)’

Description

When using a Transactions Services document in Strategy Web, users may encounter an issue in which the value '(NULL)' is displayed within an input text box. This will remain until the user clicks within the text box and manually deletes the text.
The below image is an example of how this may look in an affected document:

Steps to reproduce

Using the Strategy Tutorial Project, this behavior can be reproduced with the following steps:

  1. Create a text box in a document with dynamic text (e.g. '{Category@DESC}') that would be retrieving the data from an empty table in your database.
  2. Right click on the text box and choose 'Configure Transaction.' Define this text box as a 'text field' control style, mapping to an input from your Transaction Report. Click 'Apply' and 'OK.'
  3. Execute the document and click within the text field. The 'NULL' text does not disappear and will need to be deleted manually before typing in any value to write back to the database.

Why is this happening?

This behavior only occurs when the text box input field defined for Transaction Services starts with dynamic text retrieving attribute data and is also querying an empty table.

Solution

This behavior is resolved by adding a space into the text box prior to the dynamic text. By doing so, the '(NULL)' will no longer be displayed on execution and need to be cleared before entering text into the field.
