A hierarchy is interpreted differently within a drill map depending on the section in which it is placed. Below is an explanation of how a hierarchy is interpreted within each section:
Up and Down:
When placed in these sections, Strategy will replace the attributes within the hierarchy with the hierarchy itself, as illustrated in the example below:
The drill map, My Drill Map, includes two hierarchies within the Down section, Customer (Drilling) and Geography (Drilling), as shown below:

My Drill Map has been associated with the Region attribute. When attempting to drill down on Region only, the hierarchies are listed as options, as shown below;

Drilling directly to a hierarchy is not always valid and may result in generating invalid SQL and/or an error similar to the one illustrated below:

SQLEngine got an Exception from DFC: A hierarchy on a template must be related to one or more attributes in the report filter, or it cannot be replaced by one (or multiple) attributes. Error in Process method of Component SQLEngineServer, Project Strategy Tutorial Job 508, Error Code=-214721800.
Across:
When a hierarchy is placed in this section, Strategy allows drilling to any dimension within the hierarchy. This will allow for users to drill to other directions, namely to any attribute within the hierarchy, and up and down to the attribute's parent(s) and children, as illustrated below.
My Drill Map is modified to include the Customer (Drilling) and Geography (Drilling) hierarchies to the Across section:

When drilling on the Region attribute within a report, the 'Other Directions' drilling option is available and includes the added hierarchies, as shown below:

If a user drills up or down on Region, the parent and child attributes of Region will also be displayed, as shown below:
