KB17549: How to create a dynamic web server name in Report Services documents in MicroStrategy Developer (formerly Desktop)

Stefan Zepeda

Article outlines how to create a dynamic web server name in Report Services documents in MicroStrategy Developer (formerly Desktop)

The following steps describe how to create dynamic server name in Strategy Report Services documents

This is effective for the following situations:

  • Having different machine name for Strategy Web and Intelligence Server
  • Developing project with many hyperlinks. And there will be a possibility to move project from one to another environment and two environments have different server names.
  • Port used for Web Server is not the default number.
  • Create table in the warehouse and store server names. In case the port number is not default, create an additional port number column.
    Example in SQL Server
    Definition
    CREATE TABLE .(
    (50) NOT NULL,
    (1, 0) NOT NULL,
    (50) NULL
    (5) NULL)
  • Data

  • Create a Freeform SQL report in Strategy Developer that returns only the server name (and port number if necessary) as new metric. In this example, server_id column is used to distinguish development server.

    Report Definition

Make sure that only metrics are on the report, as shown below:

  •
    Execution Result

  • Add the Freeform SQL report made in step 2 into the Report Services documents with hyperlinks, a shown below:

  • Create a hyperlink with dynamic texts of metrics on Freeform SQL report.
URL examples (Dynamic texts {} and {} return server name and port number stored in the warehouse table):

    • http://{}:{}/MicroStrategy/asp/Main.aspx?Server={}&Project={&PROJECT}&Port=0&evt=2048001&src=mstrWeb.2048001&documentID=DOCUMENT_GUID
