How to create a configuration file for server administration in MicroStrategy Office 9.4.1 and above.

Strategy Office allows the user to administrate the client machines settings from a centralize location. This technical note documents the process of generating a configuration file and making the deployment to the client machines.

  • In a Strategy Office client open the options window and set up all the options accordingly.
  • Export the current setting into a file. Use the button "Export" to do it.

  • This will generate a file with all the settings of the current client machine. The file will have the following format.

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <configuration>
    <appSettings>
    <add key="Word Result Row Limit" value="50" enable="1" override="0" />
    ……………
    <add key="Excel Multiple Result Placement" value="2" enable="1" override="0" />
    </appSettings>
    </configuration>

  • The settings that should be changed on the client machine, must be changed to override="1".
  • Add the appropriate restrictions nodes to the configuration XML. The restrictions nodes allow the administrator to apply different configuration to different users or group of users. The administrator can apply a restriction base on IP address, user name, host name or machine name.

    <restrictions id="Restriction_id" >
    <ip></ip>
    <user>corp\user1</user>
    <host></host>
    <machine></machine>
    <restriction>userRestrictions</restriction>
    </restrictions>
    <restrictions id="userRestrictions" >
    <user>corp\user</user>
    </restrictions>

  • Once the restrictions has been added to the configuration file the user need to link a restriction with an AppSettings node.
  • To deploy the application setting to all the client, the file needs to be deployed in the following location:
    \WebServicesDirectory\Office with the name moimain.dll.config. An example file already exists in this location.
  • The next time the clients connect to the Web Services server the changes will be apply.
