The Sort Document function performed on a metric that is not present in the grid doesn't work in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.1

SYMPTOM:
The Sort Document function performed on a metric that is not present in the grid doesn't work in Strategy Web 9.3.1.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • Create a compound metric, for instance 'Revenue + Profit'.
  • Create a report with the newly created metric added, plus some other metrics.
  • Create a report services document based on the report.
  • Insert a grid to the report services document (the compound metric 'Revenue + Profit' is not in the grid).
  • Sort the document with the metric 'Revenue + Profit'.

CAUSE:
The sort document function in Strategy Web 9.3.1 requires the target object in the document template.

WORKAROUND:

  • Add the grid, including the compound metric, to the report services document.
  • Sort the report services document against the compound metric.

  • Create a metric selector and set the grid as the target. Users need to enable multiple selections for the selector.
  • Run the report services document and select the metrics except the compound metric.

  • Switch back to the design mode. Set the selector to "Invisible" (Right-click the selector, choose "Properties and Formatting -> General, and uncheck the check box "Visible").
  • Save and execute the report services document again.
