World Cup 2018 dossier

Amy Laresch

Product Manager • Strategy

See if this dossier correctly predicted this year's World Cup champion by analyzing past statistics. Created by Ernesto Ceballos, Senior Sales Engineer.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
Does this dossier correctly predict the 2018 World Cup champions? Check out the visualizations below to find out!
This is the 3rd post in our weekly series of winning dossiers from Strategy's internal "So you think you can dossier" contest - created by Ernesto Ceballos, Senior Sales Engineer.
Here's the dossier-inspired artwork created by the Creative Services team.

Why did you choose this dataset?

"I have always been passionate about soccer, it is the national sport in Mexico, my native country. The World Cup is the one major event we all wait for every 4 years. The streets and offices all get paralyzed when there’s a big match going on, especially if Mexico is playing, the whole country stops all activities and people try to find a tv screen somewhere to watch the game. It is interesting to analyze past World Cup statistics to attempt to find a winning pattern and predict this year’s champion. With the power of Strategy Dossier I wanted to find some potential candidates to win this year."

What questions were you planning to ask?

"I wished to know if countries had a correlation between the number of previous appearances in the World Cup and the number of finals played. Also, I wished to know how well teams had performed against First Stage opponents in the past to come up with the probability of advancing to the Knockout stage. Lastly, I wished to come up with a probability formula to predict this year’s champion based on Number of previous appearances, past statistics against first round opponents, number of finals played, and titles won."

What visualizations did you choose and why?

"For the teams flag and information on each group I chose a grid since there is no better way to show descriptive information in such a simple and direct way."

"To show the number of titles won I chose the world map since it gives you a full perspective on which continents have most winners. Combo charts are great to show two variables in time. When showing the previous number of appearances in a bar chart I thought a square or tick mark on top of the bars would be great to show the number of finales played and find correlations."

"Finally, bubble charts are great to show 4 variables, since you have 2 axis sections, the color, and size. The bubble chart showed clearly which countries have had great success in past World Cups based on these variables."

What did you learn about this dataset through your dossier?

"I learned that although Germany and Brazil looked to have a great chance based on 1) previous appearances 2) score against first round opponents in other World Cups 3) number of finales played, and 4) number of titles won, they ended up going home early in the tournament. France eventually became champions and they were the 5th option in my Dossier. My prediction was not too bad but this teaches that we should enrich this analysis by bringing individual player stats from the past year. This World Cup showed that individual performances by certain gifted players tipped the balance on several occasions."
