While setting up a MySQL ODBC connection, the following error is encountered: “Authentication plugin 'mysql_native_password' cannot be loaded”.

Symptom

The connection fails with the following error message.
Connect failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. [366:364: on SQLHANDLE] 364 [94:0: on SQLHANDLE] 523 92 [08004:2059: on SQLHANDLE] [MySQL][ODBC 9.3(w) Driver]Authentication plugin 'mysql_native_password' cannot be loaded: /usr/local/mysql/lib/plugin/mysql_native_password.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Cause

This issue occurs because the connection string is missing required additional parameters that the connection expects.

Solution

If you encounter error “Authentication plugin 'mysql_native_password' cannot be loaded”, add below parameters in the ODBC connection string/DSN:

mysql-native-password=ON
PLUGIN_DIR=/opt/mstr/MicroStrategy/drivers/odbc/mysql/plugin
