10.413: Advanced Documents: Interactivity & Joining Datasets

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

Create documents to combine data from multiple sources in a pixel-perfect format. Allow end users to interact with documents using selectors, panels, and widgets. The majority of this course is hands on using MicroStrategy Web in a Cloud environment.

SYMPTOM:
When users create a prompt and utilize a wildcard, ' * ', search on an attribute element ID browse form, no elements are returned although the attribute ID is present in the list of available elements in Strategy Desktop8.1.x and 9.0.x The following prompt displays all elements of the Region attribute. Notice the Region element ID 10 with description Germany, as shown below:

When performing a wildcard search, ' *0 ',on the attribute ID 10 (for Germany), search results return 'No Items Found' even though these elements exist in the list, as shown below:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue in the Strategy Tutorial project:

  1. Modify the Region attribute display to show both the ID and Description browse forms.
  2. Create a prompt on the attribute Region.
  3. Create a new report with Year in the rows and include the prompt created in step two above.
  4. When prompted to select an element value, instead of selecting a value, search for an ID value by typing in ' *0 '. Notice that using the wildcard search, ' * 0', returns message 'No Items Found' although the element ID 10 does exist in the element list.

CAUSE:
Star, ' * ', wildcard search in a prompt does not allow for searching on attribute ID forms.

ACTION:
This issue is currently logged as an enhancement request. Contact Strategy Technical Support for an update on the status of this issue.

WORKAROUND:
A star, ' * ', wildcard search can be performed on description forms of an attribute. Use the asterisk (*) to substitute for one or more characters. For example, 'sales*' locates all words with sales in the title. The location of the asterisk is important. 'Sales*' might bring back salesman, or sales tax, but it wouldn't find dollar sales. To bring back dollar sales, the query must be '*sales'.
