5 Questions with Andy Smith

Location: Tysons Corner, VA

1. How did you get into the technology field?
At University, I was formally trained as a scientist. Developing and testing hypotheses, generating a large amount of experimental data, and then working manually and arduously through the data analysis in order to form a coherent conclusion. Also, something about triple integrals and partial differential equations. When I bumped into Strategy at a careers fair in Cambridge, I wish I had had the opportunity to leverage our analytical insights back in the day. I had always been super interested in data and in the internet, but hearing a vision of the future where a crystal ball sat on every desktop was a mission I found to be super compelling. It was either that or go and count penguins in Antarctica.
2. What’s your favorite part of Community?
We transformed Community a year ago through the addition of high-impact videos and a persona-based approach to guided learning paths for Developers, Analysts, Architects, and Administrators of our platform. This gave us a much more impactful landing ground for people looking to identify and train themselves on the requisite skills. We can see from the click-through and heat-map data from our user base that these additions were highly successful while also being a great deal of fun to watch and engage with.
3. What’s your favorite topic to write about?
As a closet Analyst developing Applications all the time (and being heavily influenced by my wife being a UX designer), I’m fanatical about ripping Dossiers, Data and Visualizations down to the bare minimum required for immediate insight and action. Over the last couple of years we’ve been utilizing this methodology to bring transparency and data-based decision making to all aspects of Technology. We’re trying to bring data to all processes running throughout our organization.
4. Name one feature you would like to add to Community.
I’d love to be able to have a more effective authentication method to identify our user-base by customer to see where their needs lie. We could utilize this data to provide more proactive Support, Services and ultimately drive Sales.
5. Why Strategy (as a product)?
We have seen through our relationships with our customers, partners, Gartner, Forrester, and others that our Platform leads the world in terms of critical capabilities. We have dramatically improved the way we approach software development for our workforce through our agile transformation and our customer understanding through the Intelligent Enterprise. Our product roadmap is aligned closer than ever to customer priorities by effective partnerships of Technology with Support, Services, Sales, Marketing, Education, and our CXO team.
Bonus Question: What’s your favorite aspect of working at a multinational corporation?
I am lucky to have the opportunity to visit our customers, see their applications, and how our Technologies are used all over the world. What excites me most is seeing the mission-critical applications that our customers build on top of our technology to empower their workforce and take immediate actions. Our Tech centers in Warsaw and Hangzhou play a critical part in delivering these capabilities and I’m always learning from the different cultures, approaches and development techniques that I see. British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke wrote that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. I’d like to make a magic Strategy platform.
