Additional information available about the Intelligence Server memory state from MSTRCTL command

Weisheng Zhong

Software Engineer, Principal • MicroStrategy

As of MicroStrategy 2020, mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer gs has been enhanced to provide information about the Intelligence Server memory state.

MSTRCTL is a Strategy Intelligence Server control utility used to retrieve Intelligence Server related information and manipulate Intelligence Server instances from the command line. For more information on MSTRCTL, see KB10941.
As of Strategy 2020, the existing command

mstrctl -s IntelligenceServer gs
has been enhanced to retrieve new information about the Intelligence Server memory state. If the Intelligence Server continuously runs into the stage with low memory available, the low available memory state appears in Workstation's Topology section. This information can then help Strategy Administrators monitor the health of their memory usage and determine when they should unload cubes, stop certain jobs, or adjust the memory limit setting.
In Strategy 2020, four additional lines will appear in the status-iserver.xml file:
<memory>  <logging_time>DATE_AND_TIME</logging_time>  <memory_state>VALUE</memory_state></memory>

For example, if your Intelligence Sever is in a low available memory state, the .xml file appears as follows:
<status> <computer_name>AMachine</computer_name> <login>.\UserA</login> <process_id>10000</process_id> <process_creation_time>2019-11-15 21:15:13.389Z</process_creation_time> <state can_be_paused="0">running</state> <execution_mode>service</execution_mode> <version_info> <file_version>11.2.0000.x</file_version> <file_description></file_description> <company_name></company_name> <original_filename>MSTRSVR2_64.DLL</original_filename> <product_name>Strategy 2020</product_name> <product_version>11.2.0</product_version> <legal_copyright></legal_copyright> <legal_trademarks></legal_trademarks> </version_info> <application> <version>11.2.0000.x</version> <tcp_port_number>34952</tcp_port_number> <rest_port_number>34962</rest_port_number> </application> <memory>  <logging_time>2019-11-15 21:15:14.869</logging_time>  <memory_state>low</memory_state> </memory></status>

For a complete list of MSTRCTL functionality, execute the utility with the '-h' option:

mstrctl -h
