KB483551:After applying one of Microsoft Windows' August 13 security updates or corresponding roll-up, MicroStrategy components installed on the machine produce an "Invalid procedure call or argument" error or fail to operate as normal

Scott Rowley

Director, Application Security Engineering • MicroStrategy

The following knowledge base article describes an issue where MicroStrategy platform components fail to work as expected after applying one of Microsoft Windows August 13th Security Updates or corresponding roll-up for Windows.

Description

After applying one of the Microsoft Windows Updates released on August 13, 2019 on a Windows machine running Strategy components, the Strategy components may fail to operate as normal. This impacts all versions of Strategy and all Windows operating systems that received the August 13 updates. Microsoft has confirmed this is a known issue impacting the August updates and is pushing fixes through normal Windows update channels.
In Strategy Developer, users may see errors such as “Invalid procedure call or argument” when performing actions such as adding attribute elements into report filters.

In Strategy Narrowcast Server, user may notice that subscriptions do not execute as expected.
In Strategy Object Manager, the user is unable to view objects in the Import Selected Objects section of the Add Objects window.

Solution

Microsoft has released optional non-security updates that can be applied on top of the August 13 updates to restore functionality to Strategy as well as other impacted products. Apply the supplemental update to resolve this issue and restore functionality. A non-comprehensive list is located below.
Alternatively, you can uninstall the August security update.
For a complete list and all operating system versions, please see Microsoft's Release Information page:
