KB485048: Column limit for file import in Strategy 2021 Update 2 and later

Description 

Starting in Strategy 2021 Update 2, there is a new column limit introduced for security concerns, which limits the number of columns for files imported to Strategy Web and Workstation. By default, the column limit is 5,000. If more than 5,000 columns are imported, the following error is returned. 
Error in importing file. Check the file to import. [Discover failed. Error in importing files. Please check the file to import. Error type: Data Import Error. column count is over the limit of 5000, please check the original file.]
 

How to change the column limit

A new registry

DataImportColumnLimit

For Windows environments (including Strategy Intelligence Server and Workstation)

• Stop the Strategy Intelligence Server (or Workstation application). 
• Open the Windows registry (Start > Run > regedit).
• Navigate to the following key: 
  

  
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\MicroStrategy\DSS Suite
  

  
  
• Add a new DWORD (32-bit) called "DataImportColumnLimit" to the key.
  

• Start the Strategy Intelligence Server (or Workstation application).

For Linux/UNIX environments

1. Stop the Strategy Intelligence Server. 
2. Open the

   MSIReg.reg

   file (located in the

   <MSTR_HOME>

   folder. 
3. Locate the following entry and add a DWORD value in hexadecimal for "DataImportColumnLimit" under the entry. In the following example, the value 00001388 in hexadecimal equals 5000 in decimal: 
   

   
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS Suite]
   "DataImportColumnLimit"=dword:00001388

   
   
4. Save and close

   MSIReg.reg.

For Mac environments (Strategy Workstation)

1. Exit the Strategy Workstation app. 
2. Right-click the app and click show package contents. 
3. Find MSIReg.reg (under

   Contents/Frameworks/OneTierDashboardWindow.framework/Resources

   ) and open it in a text editor. 
4. Locate the following entry: 
   

   
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS Suite]
   

   
   
5. Add a DWORD value in hexadecimal under the entry:
   

   
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\DSS Suite] 2"DataImportColumnLimit"=dword:00001388

   
   
6. Save and close the

   MSIReg.reg

   file.
7. Launch the app.
