KB484013: Cube cache folder size increased after upgrading to MicroStrategy 10.10

Cheng Guo

Product Owner, Principal • Strategy

This article explains why the cube cache folder size increased after upgrading to MicroStrategy 10.10. This article also provides a solution to prevent this behavior from occurring.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

Loading an an old cube cache repeatedly may create redundant files and increase the size of the cube cache folder, if the cube cache was published by the Intelligence Server prior to Strategy 10.10.

Steps to reproduce

  • Install Strategy 10.9 or an older version.
  • Publish a cube.
  • Upgrade to Strategy and upgrade the metadata using the same cube files generated before.
  • In Project Configurations, reduce the cube index growth limit setting to the minimum value of 50%.
  • Run multiple dossiers, documents, or reports based on this cube to let the cube size grow to the limit.

A new folder with the "_objects" suffix is created in the cube cache folder.

  • There will be some .obj files inside this new folder.

  • Unload the cube.
  • Reload the cube.
  • Repeat steps 5 and 6.

Each time the cube is reloaded, the same sets of dossiers are executed, and the object files will be duplicated.

Why is this happening?

In Strategy 10.10, the "Cube Memory Governing for Attribute Element Indexes" feature was introduced. When the cube size grows beyond the user defined cube index growth limit, the Intelligence Server will dump internal objects to the "_objects" folder, with the object ID as the file name. The objects will be read back to memory when they are used again.
The object ID was not persisted in the old cube cache. After the cube is reloaded, new IDs are generated for the objects. As a result, duplicate files are dumped to the disk.

Solution

You should republish the cube with Strategy 10.10 or a later version of the Intelligence Server. The object IDs are persisted, so there won't be duplicated ones.
You could also upgrade to Strategy 2020. The objects with missing IDs will be cleared after the cube is unloaded.
