KB485131: Database administration services cannot start due to missing permissions for the JVM.sh file

Archana Munukuntla

Quality Architect • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the database administration service fails to start due to missing permissions on a MicroStrategy 2020 version. This article provides steps to add the permissions to successfully start the service.

Description

In an environment without Java installed, the database administration service cannot be started due to missing permissions for the JVM.sh file.

Steps to reproduce

  • Install a Strategy 2020 version (can be Strategy 2020 Update 1 - Update 5) on an environment that does not have Java installed.
By default, the database administration service is not running.
  • Start the service:

    cd /var/opt/MicroStrategy/install/initd_scripts/
    ./repository-administration start

  • From the log entries, you can see that the service cannot be started as the service is looking for the java machine. See the entries below:

    [2021-08-05 13:08:16][INFO] mstr-repo-dba-operations is stopped.

    [2021-08-05 13:08:44][INFO] Starting Automated Database Administration Process...nohup:
failed to run command 'java': No such file or directory

    [2021-08-05 15:32:00][INFO] Starting Automated Database Administration Process...nohup:
failed to run command 'java': No such file or directory

Why is this happening?

The JVM.sh script does not have executable permissions for the Strategy user (by default,

mstr
), so the service is looking for the java machine to start the service.
If java is not installed on the environment, the service cannot be started

Solution

Executable permissions must be given to the JVM.sh script so that it can run on the java bundled Platform installation.

  • Navigate to the JVM.sh location:
    cd /<Install_path>/Repository/repository-administration/conf
    .
  • Run
    chmod +x JVM.sh

  • Navigate to the service script and start the service:

    cd /var/opt/MicroStrategy/install/initd_scripts/
    ./repository-administration start

The service can be started without any issues.
