KB484029: Deploying Community Connectors on Tomcat results in a org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException error

Pawel Jastrzebski

Software Engineer, Senior • Strategy

This article explains why the org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException error is occurring when deploying Community Connectors on Tomcat. This article also provides a solution to avoid this issue.

Description

When trying to deploy Community Connectors on Tomcat, you may receive the following error message:

SEVERE [localhost-startStop-2] org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.addChildInternal ContainerBase.addChild: start:org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: Failed to start component[StandardEngine[Catalina].StandardHost[localhost].StandardContext[/CommunityConnectors]][…]Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: More than one fragment with the name [spring_web] was found. This is not legal with relative ordering. See section 8.2.2 2c of the Servlet specification for details. Consider using absolute ordering.[…]

Why is this happening?

This error is occurring because of conflicting web-fragments' names.

Solution

To resolve this issue, you are required to use absolute ordering of deployment descriptors. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Shut down Tomcat.
  2. Delete the
    CommunityConnectors.war
    file under Webapps. Leave the unpacked CommunityConnectors folder.
  3. Delete the work folder within Tomcat to clear all Tomcat caches.
  4. Open
    /Webapps/CommunityConnectors/WEB-INF/web.xml.
  5. After the
    </display-name>
    closed tag, add the line following line:
    <absolute-ordering />
  6. Start Tomcat.
