Design Guidelines for Pixel-perfect Document Design

Humzah Nasir

Senior Business Analyst • Strategy

MicroStrategy offers the design tools needed to produce production-ready dashboards and documents. Designers are able to build pixel-perfect scorecards, financial reports and documents, and other interactive dashboards that span various styles of BI.

SYMPTOM:
When opening an exported Excel file, an error message “Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls” may be displayed to a user as shown below.

ka04W000000OhYsQAK_0EM4400000029J4.jpeg

Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes

CAUSE:
One possible cause for this issue is that the sheet name of the exported Excel file contains double byte symbols, which are invalid in Microsoft Excel whose default language is set to double byte languages, such as Japanese and Chinese.
The exporting mechanism currently does not remove double byte symbols from the sheet name when exporting to Excel. Hence, double byte symbols will still be used in the sheet name.

ACTION:
This issue is fixed in Strategy 10.0 and higher versions.  Upgrade to the latest Strategy platform release or feature release version to take advantage of the fix.

WORKAROUND:
Instead of double byte symbols, use single byte symbols in the name of Strategy reports.
