Dossier imported with MicroStrategy for Office add-in disappears from the add-in after deleting metrics in Excel sheet.

Mateusz Rusinowski

Senior Support Engineer • MicroStrategy

After importing visualization from a Dossier to Excel spreadsheet using MicroStrategy for Office add-in, you can see the Dossier in the add-in panel on the right side of Excel window. For some visualizations, when you delete the imported metrics from the Excel sheet, the dossier disappears from add-in panel.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

CAUSE:

When importing more complex visualizations (for example bar charts) into Excel it is not possible to import the visualization in the same way as a standard grid, because Excel does not support a default Crosstab functionality. Therefore, a solution to this limitation is to create a temporary "header" first to be used as a reference point, then hide it (as it is not an accurate header for a simple table) and build the complex grid on top of that reference.
As the Crosstab limitation on Excel needed such a solution, and as these temporary headers need to be hidden to display the visualization accurately, once the metric values are deleted after the import, the Dossier is getting removed as well (since the reference headers will be hidden/gone after the import).

SOLUTION:

Since the issue is happening due to the Excel limitations on Crosstab functionality, as of now it is not possible to overcome this limitation as it is not coming from Strategy product.
