KB485415: Dossier with derived metric containing constant metric returns an "Unspecified error".

Puneet Nagri

Quality Engineer, Principal • MicroStrategy

Compound derived metric, using a metric based on constant value like Sum(1){~+} throws an error. This is addressed in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 5 with Data Engine Version 2021

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

A derived metric with a compound formula, throws an error, if its components are from 2 linked datasets and contains a constant metric with "Metric Options" for the derived metric is set to "Aggregate From Base". For example, if a derived metric M1 is created with formula: M1=M2+M3. M2 is an AFB constant metric like Sum(1){~+}, while M3 is a regular metric. Bringing metric M1 in a visualization results in "Unspecified error".

Steps to reproduce

  • Create a Dossier with 2 datasets.

  • Create a derived metric M3 =Sum([Tot Dollar Sales]){~+}
  • Create a derived metric M2 =Sum(1){~+}
  • Create a derived metric M1 =M2+M3 (Fig1)
  • Add M1 to the visualisation.(Fig 2)

Solution

To fix the data issue, upgrade to Strategy 2021 Update 5 and set the Data Engine Version to be 2021. To set Data Engine Version, refer to How to set Date Engine Version.
