KB485133: "Error in login: Login failure" with Standard or LDAP authentication when fencing is enabled in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 2

Stefanie Polleri

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This article addresses the error that occurs with Standard or LDAP authentication when fencing is enabled. This article also provides a solution and workaround to avoid this error.

Description

After upgrading to Strategy 2021 Update 2, Standard or LDAP authentication fails when fencing is configured and enabled in Strategy Web Administration > Other Configuration.

Steps to reproduce

  • Set up a cluster.
  • Enable fencing, as described in KB318755. For example:

    CREATE USERFENCE "fence1" USERS "ADMINISTRATOR" NODES "node1", "node2" PROJECTS "Strategy Tutorial" PRECEDENCE 1;

  • Go to Web Administration > Other Configuration, select the Enable fencing checkbox.

  • Log into Web with a Web user and make sure user login has a non-empty password.

Why is this happening?

In Strategy 2021 Update 2, when fencing is enabled, Strategy Web sends a

createsession
request with an empty password, which causes the "Login Failure".

Solution

This issue has been addressed in Strategy 2021 Update 3. Please upgrade to take advantage of this fix.

Workaround

It is recommended that you disable user fencing:

  1. Go to Web Administration > Other Configuration.
  2. Deselect the Enable fencing checkbox.

Trusted, Integrated, and SAML/OIDC authentication methods are not affected by this issue and can be used as an alternative to Standard or LDAP authentication.
