KB485113: Excel export fails and cannot be opened when a grid has more than 3 number format conditions

This article explains why an Excel export fails to open when adding more than 3 number format conditions in a grid. This article also provides a workaround to avoid this error.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

When creating grids in a dossier, you can format numbers by adding different conditions. However, when exporting a grid to Excel, if the grid owns 4 or more format conditions, the following error occurs upon opening the exported Excel file.

We found a problem with some content in 'DossierName.xlsx'. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.”

Steps to reproduce

  • Right-click on the metric which you want to add format to.
  • Go to Number Format and choose Custom from the first drop-down.
  • Add the conditions for the number format separated them by “;“.
    For example, [>=1000000]#,##0,,"M";[>=1000]#,##0,"K";0;[<=-1000000]#,##0,,"M";[<=-1000]#,##0,"K"
    There are 5 number format conditions in the above example, market by different colors.

Why is this happening?

This issue is caused due to Excel’s limitation where 3 is the maximum number of format conditions that can be supported.

Workaround

Do not add more than 3 conditions in the number format field. If there are more than 3 number format conditions in the grid, you may export them to a PDF, instead of an Excel file.
