KB482970: Exporting dossier contains map visualizations to PDF takes much longer than other visualizations.

Yang Huang

Quality Engineer, Principal • MicroStrategy

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM:
Exporting dossiers that contain map visualization would take much longer (several times) than other visualization.
CAUSE:

This is an option of PDF Export Engine, in the application.properties, located in <Your Install Path>/Intelligence Server/PDFExportService, or <Your Install Path>/InteligenceServer/PDFExportService.

During exporting, some external network resources may be necessary to generate the PDF. For example, the dossier contains a Google Map or an ESRI Map visualization. External resources as they are, Export Engine cannot detect the exact number of network requests or determine which one is the final request. A network request may bring more requests, even recursively, and this is all controlled by the 3rd-party component (Google Map, ESRI Map, or etc.)
Therefore, when there are no more requests in 500ms, Export Engine will be starting to generate the PDF. To make this behavior configurable, the setting exporter.network.idletime=500 was added.
If the value is enlarged, Export Engine will have to wait for a longer time and check if there is indeed no network requests in the past N milliseconds. This setting has direct impact on the overall performance. Do not enlarge it unless any resources are not loaded into PDF.
ACTION:
Reset exporter.network.idletime back to 500. KB482970
