Strategy continues to be dedicated to improving the installation and upgrade experience of customers. Deploying the Strategy software platform is the first step towards an enterprise scale business intelligence system. The Strategy platform supports components across both Windows and Linux operating systems to support your BI needs. The Strategy installation routines are scalable to support any size deployment whether you are deploying a single Strategy node or a dozen machines for a clustered environment.
Beginning with Strategy 2021 Update 4, you can only install an update using a full platform installer on both Windows and Linux. The move to a full platform installer expands our development capabilities, enabling us to deliver more exciting enhancements and impactful features that would have previously been impossible in an update.
You can directly install Strategy 2021 Update 4. Using the full platform installer, you can install an update without first installing the full platform release, making the installation and upgrade experience seamless.

Previously with the update installer, if you wanted to uninstall the update, you would revert to the platform version. For example, if you were on Strategy 2021 Update 3 and uninstalled Strategy, you would revert to the Strategy 2021 platform release.
With the move to a full platform installer starting in Strategy 2021 Update 4, uninstalling Strategy completely removes Strategy and all its associated features.
To prevent any data loss, we strongly recommend that you back up your data, configuration files, metadata, plugins, cubes, caches, and image files prior to uninstalling Strategy. To proceed with the uninstallation of Strategy 2021 Update 4, you must confirm by typing “
uninstall” in the prompted field. By doing this, you understand that Strategy will be completely uninstalled and that you have taken a backup of your data.

In the event of an error during an installation, you can reinstall or modify your installation. Learn more about adding or removing Strategy components here.

In addition to the move to a full platform installer, the following installation-related features are available with Strategy 2021 Update.
Tomcat is widely adopted due to its phenomenal support of large-scale, mission critical web applications. Compared to other application servers, it is lightweight, easy to configure, and very cost-effective. The decision to bundle Tomcat with Strategy provides many benefits for customers who are hesitant to move away from non-certified application servers. As a bundled service, Strategy actively maintains Tomcat through regular tests and supports customers with any issues they have. Upgrades will be carried out throughout the year to ensure continued stability, security, and performance with their web applications.
For more details on supported third party software, please see Certified Configurations.
In Strategy 2021 Update 4, Tomcat v9.0.54 was shipped on both the Linux and Windows platform. Please note that the behavior of deploying war files on Linux is different from the Windows platform. Currently, we only deploy war files on products selected in a fresh installation if Apache Tomcat is selected. However, when modifying and upgrading your installation, the installer will not deploy war files for any products.
In this scenario, you will need to deploy the following war files manually under
<INSTALL_PATH>/Tomcat/webapps/:
<install_path>/WebUniversal/Strategy.war
<install_path>/WebServicesJ2EE/StrategyWS.war
<install_path>/LibraryWebMobile/StrategyLibrary.war
<install_path>/CommunityConnectors/CommunityConnectors.war
<install_path>/MobileServer/StrategyMobile.war
When a customer deployment meets an unexpected outage of the Intelligence server, Strategy Support and system administrators try to troubleshoot if a core file was generated anywhere on the system. If not, support engineers must ask system administrators to follow the setup, try a simulated crash, and ensure that crash file can be generated. Beginning with Strategy 2021 Update 4, the installer sensitizes system administrators to enable core file generation, ensuring that these files are automatically generated in the event of a crash for easier troubleshooting.
Please see KB131610 to learn more about configuring the correct system settings to ensure core files for the Strategy Intelligence Server are created by the Linux operating system
In some scenarios, the installation may fail due to missing critical files. For example, due to path-length limitations on Windows as well as disk-space issues, customers often move critical files from the local machine when installing or upgrading Strategy. In Strategy 2021 Update 4, the full platform installer generates a warning message early in the installation process notifying you which critical components are missing. When the error message populates, you have the option of fixing the problem, rechecking for integrity once again, and continuing with the installation process without exiting out of the installer.
Strategy’s best practice for maintenance is to have separate environments for development, testing, and production. Objects should be migrated from lower to higher lanes to avoid discrepancies in the metadata.
The new MicroStrategy Storage Service has access to the Strategy repository or a remote repository enabling new workflows for object migration between environments within Workstation.
