KB438918: Granting MicroStrategy user privileges through MicroStrategy security roles does not allow access to Security Filter Manager in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x

Kyle Shoebotham

Senior Manager, Technical Support • Strategy

This knowledge base article describes an identified defect in MicroStrategy that prevents users from accessing the Security Filter Manager in MicroStrategy Developer 10.x. Granting the same permissions to a MicroStrategy user directly through the User Editor interface allows for the Security Filter Manager option to show up. This defect is under review by MicroStrategy. Contact MicroStrategy Technical Support for an update on this issue.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Developer 10.x, users can access the Security Filter Manager found in the Administration tool menu --> Projects, as shown in the screenshot below:

With this tool, users can manipulate the security filters for the projects in a project source. In addition to traditional privileges to access Developer, a user must have the following privileges granted to access the Security Filter Manager in this fashion:

  • Assign security filters
  • Assign security roles
  • Create and edit security roles

If privileges are granted through Strategy security roles, then the users cannot access the Security Filter Manager in this fashion. The option is grayed out, as shown in the screenshot below:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
The following steps can be followed in any implementation of Strategy Tutorial 10.x.

  1. In Strategy Developer 10.x, create a new Strategy user, but do not grant any privileges. Call this Strategy user "TestUser".
  2. In an internet browser, navigate to the Security Role Manager page.
  3. Create a new security role containing the Analyst, Developer, and Administrator privileges. This encompasses the privileges necessary to access Security Filter Manager.
  4. Assign the security role to TestUser, as shown in the following screenshot:
ka02R000000kV2NQAU_0EM44000000Q7lI.png
  1. In Strategy Developer 10.x, access the project source as TestUser.
  2. Go to the Administration --> Projects menu. Note that the Security Filter Manager option is grayed out.

CAUSE:
This is an identified defect in Strategy 10.x. Privileges granted through security roles do not allow for the same functionality as granting the same through the User Manager. This is currently being reviewed by Strategy for a potential fix.
ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.
WORKAROUND:
Grant users the "Assign security filters", "Assign security roles", and "Create and edit security roles" privileges directly through the User Manager, not through a security role, in Strategy Developer 10.x.
This issue has been logged as Scopus ID: 215318 and Rally ID: DE79091.
