How to Enable Remote Access for PostgreSQL

Kevin Liu

Software Engineer, Senior • Strategy

This article explains how to enable remote access to a PostgreSQL database on a separate machine.

In Strategy 2020 and above, PostgreSQL is supported as a Platform Analytics repository. However, if you want to access a PostgreSQL database hosted on a separate machine, you must modify the pg_hba.conf file to grant your machine access to the database.
Note: If you are connecting to PostgreSQL locally via the command line, you can use mstr_psql platform_analytics_wh mstr_pa -h 127.0.0.1 to connect.

How to Modify the pg_hba.conf File

In the pg_hba.conf file, you must enable remote access to the database.

  1. Open the pg_hba.conf file.
    Windows
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\Repository\pgsql\PGDATA\pg_hba.conf
    Linux
    /opt/MicroStrategy/Repository/pgdata/pg_hba.conf
  2. Add the following line to the file:
    host platform_analytics_wh mstr_pa {Machine IP}/32 password

    For example,
    host platform_analytics_wh mstr_pa 10.21.67.61/32 password.

  3. Save the file.
  4. Restart the PostgreSQL database. Your machine has remote access to the database.
