How to Fix a Paused Services Registration Status After Uninstalling MicroStrategy 2021 and Above

Andrew Geyster

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

This article details how to fix a paused Services Registration status after uninstalling MicroStrategy 2021 and above

Description

Strategy node monitoring provides the functionality to monitor and control Strategy Services through Strategy Workstation. To support monitoring functionality, a Strategy Services Registration agent is shipped and installed on each customer's machine.
After performing an uninstall operation to Strategy 2021 and above, you may find that Services Registration and monitoring do not work properly. Specifically, when Strategy Workstation is connected to the machine and the monitoring -> services view is selected, you encounter the error message, "The attempt to get services information failed. Strategy Services Registration is NOT available, please check the service status."

Steps to Reproduce

  • Uninstall Strategy 2021 or above. In a Windows operating system, this is done by going to the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel, right-clicking Strategy 2021 (or above), and clicking Change. On the dialog box, click Remove.
  • Wait until the uninstallation process is finished. The process may ask to restart the machine.
  • Open Strategy Workstation, connect to the machine, and select the Monitoring -> Services view. The error message appears.
  • Open Windows Services Manager (also known as Services) and locate Strategy Services Registration, which is the agent supporting monitoring. The service is in a paused status, as shown below.

  • Go to the log sub-folder inside the installation directory, which has a default path of C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Services Registration\log, and open the newest Services Registration's log file.
Scenario 1: The file contains a panic: log not found entry.

  • Scenario 2: The file contains an Error starting agent entry.

Why is This Happening?

Services Registration and monitoring use a third-party binary called Consul to consolidate the list of Strategy services and their statuses on your machine. In Strategy 2021 or above, Conosol binary has been upgraded to a newer version. The new binary may write additional entries in into the local cache written into the data folder.
When the Strategy Update is uninstalled, the Consul binary is reverted back to the older version. Upon startup, this old binary attempts to load the cache from the data folder and does not recognize the additional entries written by the uninstalled, newer binary. This results in an error in the log entries.

Workaround

To resolve the issue, you need to delete the data folders and restart Strategy Services Registration.

  1. Open Windows Service Manager.
  2. Select Strategy Services Registration.
  3. In the left pane, click Stop.
  4. Remove the data folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Services Registration. You can also rename the folder. You must have administrator privileges to do this.
  5. Return to Windows Service Manager.
  6. In the left pane, click Start.
  7. Open Strategy Workstation, connect to the machine, and display the monitoring -> services view. The correct list of Strategy services and their statuses appear.
