How to display the map widget as an area map.

Lauren O'Connor

Vice President, Product Marketing • MicroStrategy

An area map displays data as colored areas on an interactive map. For example, you can display a map of the United States with the states automatically colored based on revenue per state. When you first add a map widget to a document, it automatically displays as a marker map (i.e. bubbles or diamonds to mark locations). Use the Properties and Formatting menu to change the map into an area map.

1. In Design Mode, right-click the map grid and select Properties and Formatting.
2. In the Properties menu, select Widget.
3. Click  Widget Properties.
4. In the Map Properties box, select Show Areas.
5. Select the geolocation attribute you would like to use for the areas, such as State or Country.

6. Click OK at the bottom of the Map Properties box.
7. Click OK again in the Properties and Formatting box.
When you view your document in Presentation Mode or on a mobile device the map will appear as an area map.
