KB482916: How to change the /tmp directory during Linux Installation

Archana Munukuntla

Quality Architect • MicroStrategy

This article explains why you may need to alter the /tmp directory during a Linux installation. This article also provides steps to modify the directory.

When we launch the installer on a machine with no disk space in the /tmp directory, the following messages appear:

$ ./setup.shChecking for running instances.......done.Checking file integrity.........done.Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/MicroStrategy/tools/mautils/controls/wizard/AbstractWizardPanelDescriptor       at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method)       at java.lang.Class.forName(Class.java:348)       at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.jarinjarloader.JarRsrcLoader.main(JarRsrcLoader.java:56)Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.Strategy.tools.mautils.controls.wizard.AbstractWizardPanelDescriptor       at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:382)       at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:424)       at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:357)

The setup would fail in this way if there is no space on the /tmp directory or the directory is not writable. Before installing, please set the environment variable $TEMP_DIR to point to the new tmp path.
Use the command below to alter the tmp directory.
./setup.sh -java -Djava.io.tmpdir=/path/to/tmpdir

Where
/path/to/tmpdir
is a directory with disk space and write permissions.
