How to create a metric selector in a Dashboard

Philippe Royer

Senior Manager, Professional Services • MicroStrategy

Easily create a metric selector in a Visual Insight Dashboard

Just few steps to get a metric selector in a Visual Insight Dashboard.
Applicable on Dashboard and Documents.
The solution is 100% based on the Dashboard or Document implementation so it doesn't impact the semantic layer and applies to every kind of data source.

The main dataset (here "Revenue & Discount by Category, Country, Month") contains 2 metrics Discount and Revenue. The goal is to select which Metric you want to display. On the dataset "Generic Metrics List"
create a derived metric named "Metric Selector"
On the dataset "Revenue & Discount by Category, Country, Month" create a new derived metric "KPI" defined as follows

Case([Metric Selector]="Rebates", Discount, [Metric Selector]="Sales", Revenue, 0)

Add the "Generic Metric" attribute in the filter panelYou can now select one Metric or the other, or both to dynamically change the content of your dashboard.

Limitation : The original format of the metrics is not applied. Having to display metrics in number and metrics in percent requires to have 2 sets of selectors (one for number format metrics and another one for % format)
