KB483081: New feature in MicroStrategy 2019: Ability to track the state and usage of subscriptions

Frederick Kellerman

Cloud Support Expert I • MicroStrategy

This article discusses how administrators can track the state and usage of subscriptions in a MicroStrategy environment

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
BACKGROUND
Prior to Strategy 2019 it was possible to track object state and usage through two primary means, change journaling and Intelligence Server statistics analyzed via the Enterprise Manager project. Change journaling captured information about object modifications, and Intelligence Server statistics captured statistical information about object usage in a Strategy environment. Taken together, these methods allowed administrators to track not only the current state of an object in the Strategy metadata, but also gave them visibility into the object's historical usage and let them track changes to the object over time.
THE CASE OF SUBSCRIPTIONS
However, neither change journaling or Intelligence Server statistics allowed administrators to track changes to subscriptions over time. The reason for this is that change journaling does not record information about subscriptions, and though Intelligence Server statistics does record instances of subscription executions, it does not track information about the subscription itself. For example, it does not record the current state of a subscription i.e. whether it exists or is deleted in the metadata.
Starting in Strategy 2019 it is possible for administrators to track the state and usage of subscriptions through Platform Analytics.
SUBSCRIPTION ANALYSIS THROUGH PLATFORM ANALYTICS
Platform Analytics provides an out-of-the-box dossier, Subscription Analysis, which can show statistical information and usage trends for subscriptions. It provides information about peak usage, most subscribed content, most subscribed recipients, subscription details, and more. The screenshot below shows a snippet of the information that is tracked through this dossier.

Furthermore, the object state for subscriptions can be tracked via the lu_subscription table in the Platform Analytics warehouse. Prior to Platform Analytics there was no way to report on whether or not a subscription currently existed because there was no dedicated lookup table for subscriptions in the Enterprise Manager warehouse. However, the current state of a subscription is recorded in the subscription_status column in the lu_subscription table in the Platform Analytics warehouse.
