KB483936: How to use font anti-aliasing to resolve pixelated text on document graphs

Libing Wang

Software Engineer • MicroStrategy

This article explains why the text on a document graph can look pixelated. This article also provides a solution to solve the issue.

Description

You may notice that fonts on document graphs look pixelated. While this issue is not common, the issue occurs mostly when the Intelligence Server is deployed on a Linux Server.

Why is this happening?

There are two switches that control the font quality of document graphs, one on the system level (like Linux), and the other on the document graph level.
If either of those switches are turned off, the anti-aliasing optimization, a method of smoothing the text, of the glyph in fonts will be disabled. As a result, the glyph will look pixelated.

Solution

You should enable Use font anti-aliasing in your graph Format dialog.

Once this setting is enabled, the font issue should be resolved, because in most versions of Linux, the global alias setting is turned on by default. However, if the issue continues to persist, proceed with the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the directory /etc/fonts/conf.d
  2. Use touch command to add a new file named 99-user.conf
  3. In the new file, add the following code:

    <?xml version='1.0'?>
    <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
    <fontconfig>
      <match target="font">
         <edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
           <bool>true<bool>
         </edit>
      </match>
    </fontconfig>

  4. Save the file and restart the Intelligence Server. The font should appear smoother.
