KB485299: HyperIntelligence for Web extension manifest update from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3

Nida Imtiaz

Product Manager, Senior • Strategy

This article addresses the update of the extension manifest version from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3. This article also provides upgrade guidance for those using the white-labeled extension generated via MicroStrategy Workstation.

Description

This article mentions changes being implemented as part of the update to the latest manifest version, Manifest V3, the next version of the Chromium Extensions platform. For more information on Manifest V3, see Introducing Manifest V3.
The Chromium Extensions platform introduces a new manifest version, Manifest V3, that enjoys improvements in security, privacy, and performance. It also uses more contemporary Open Web technologies, such as service workers and promises. The Chromium Extensions platform aims to progressively phase out Manifest V2 as it approaches full parity with the newer version, Manifest V3. For more details, check out Manifest V2 support timeline.

We will be releasing an updated version of the extension based on Google’s new manifest version, Manifest V3. This change imposes new browser version requirements that must be met going forward. We recommend users and customers upgrade their chromium-based browsers (Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge) to Chrome 99 for a smooth transition to the updated version of the extension. The following summarizes some expected scenarios that you can prepare for:

  • Those with the extension installed on Chrome v99 or above automatically get the update.
  • Those with the extension installed on Chrome v98 or below do not get the update until their browser is updated to Chrome v99 or above. In the meantime, their extension will continue to work on the older build.
  • Those without the extension installed on Chrome v99 or above can install the new extension as expected.
  • Those without the extension installed on Chrome v98 or below cannot install the extension anymore.

Note: The versioning numbers are the same for Microsoft Edge.

Strategy found a performance bug with Google’s new manifest version, Manifest V3, and logged an issue (Issue #1293853) with Google to address it. Google recently merged the fix into Chrome M99 version, and we are aggressively testing the extension with this new fix. Once we complete our validation, we will release an updated version of the extension based on Manifest V3. Please refer below for more information and options to publish the extension until the issue is resolved.
This change can lead to a loss of extension information, such as the saved state of cards when the extension is updated for end-users. For example:

  • Enabled/disabled state for cards
  • Blocked websites at the extension level
  • Configuration to a Strategy environment (only if a default environment is not set in the configuration)

To prevent the loss of information, customers must immediately update their extension to the 11.3.500 version. This update must be completed before February 7th, 2022, and prior to updating to the Manifest V3 version of the extension.
HyperIntelligence users trying to generate a new white-labeled extension via Strategy Workstation will not be able to publish extensions with public access to the Chrome Web Store. We apologize for the inconvenience. Until we release the new extension version based on the new Manifest V3, you can use the following options to publish the extension:

  • Publish an extension using Manifest V2 with private access to the web store until June 2022. Click here for more details provided by Google.
  • If the above is not a feasible option, then the HyperIntelligence extension can be hosted on your internal stores.

If you encounter trouble with your extension, please contact Support for further assistance.
