KB483868: In Developer, clicking Rebuild Index results in an error

Mari Sugimura

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This article explains why, in Developer, clicking Rebuild Index results in an error. This article also provides a solution to this error.

Description

In Developer, clicking Rebuild Index results in the following error:
"The search index for project XXX is missing, unusable, or not accessible. Please see DSSErrors.log for details."

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In Developer, open your project source.
  2. Go to Administration > System Monitors > Quick Search Indices.
  3. Right-click on the project you'd like to rebuild the index for and click Rebuild Index. Notice the error appears.

Why is this happening?

The Quick Search Index for the project is corrupted and the option to Rebuild Index cannot delete the corrupted files even after trying the suggestion in KB482892: How to Rebuild the Index of the Quick Search.
One possible reason for the corrupted files could be how the Search Index directory was configured. While the directory is specified to a local file location, the path can be changed to a shared location, such as \\SharedFolder. When there are multiple nodes in one clustered environment, this setting can be problematic because all the nodes may try to write to the same file at the same time.

Solution

To resolve the error, you should delete all files inside the index folder and then try to rebuild the index again.

  • In your index directory, open the index folder.
You can find the index directory in the Quick Search Manager dialog.

  • Within the index folder, open the folder of the project where the index re-building failed.
You can find the Project ID in the Project Configuration dialog.

  • Delete all files within this folder.
  • In Developer, open your project source.
  • Go to Administration > System Monitors > Quick Search Indices.
  • Right-click on the project you'd like to rebuild the index for and click Rebuild Index.
Note: It's recommended to rebuild the index when there is no activity. If this option is executed while there are other user activities on the same server, the amount of time required for this action may be longer.
