KB484311: Independent MicroStrategy for Tableau connector

Maciej Sierhej

Product Owner, Senior • Strategy

This article introduces the independent MicroStrategy for Tableau connector available starting in MicroStrategy 2020 Update 2. This article answers some questions you may have regarding the different offerings of the MicroStrategy for Tableau connector.

What is Strategy for Tableau?

Strategy for Tableau allows you to fetch data from reports or cubes that reside in Strategy projects into Tableau Public (also known as Tableau Desktop). You can import datasets with up to four million rows and 30+ columns.
Using the Tableau connector since Strategy 2019 Update 2 requires the Use Application Tableau privilege. This privilege is located in the Client-Application-Tableau privilege group.
To use Strategy for Tableau, please refer to this product documentation .

An Independent Strategy for Tableau Connector

Starting in Strategy 2020 Update 2, you can use an independent Strategy for Tableau connector.
In previous releases, Strategy for Tableau was a part of the Community Connectors module. In order to use Strategy for Tableau, you were required to install and deploy the full Community Connectors functionality. Starting in Strategy 2020 Update, you are not required to use Community Connectors if you are interested only in using the Tableau connector.
The following describes the key benefits of using the independent Strategy for Tableau connector:

  • Significantly easier and shorter installation process, which does not require the deployment of the Community Connectors
  • An independent Tableau connector opens the possibility to release the connector more often than only with each update (4 times a year), which shortens the time waiting for upgrades and new functionalities
  • The dependencies within the Community Connectors may cause problems with older versions of some of the Application Servers. The independent Tableau connector does have no such issues. The certification is also available on more application servers than on Community Connectors, ultimately giving you more options to deploy the product

How can I install the independent Tableau connector?

  1. Go to the Strategy Downloads page.
  2. Find the card for Strategy for Tableau.
  3. Choose the OS version (Windows or Linux).
  4. Download the installer.
  5. Run the installer.
  6. Follow the deployment instructions from How to Set Up Application Servers for MicroStrategy for Tableau.

What should I do if I want to install the updated version of the connector?

You should download the installer with the updated version and follow the steps described above.

I am currently using the Strategy for Tableau that is distributed with the Community Connectors. What should I do to switch to the independent version?

  1. Following the installation steps described above.
  2. If you are using the stored URLs to the connector with your Tableau Desktop software, you need to edit each one of them and change the URL from
    https://<MSTR Domain>/CommunityConnectors/mstr
    to
    https://<MSTRDomain>/StrategyForTableau/
    .

If you do not edit the URLS as described above, the import will use the Tableau connector that is embedded with Community Connectors.

What should I do if I want to use Strategy for Tableau distributed with the Community Connectors?

As for Strategy 2020 Update 2, the connector versions for the independent release and the Community Connector will be the same, with the same set of functionalities.
Starting in Strategy 2020 Update 3, all of the new functionalities will be implemented and distributed only with the independent version. The Strategy for Tableau version that is a part of the Community Connectors will continue to have 2020 Update 2 functionalities.
Starting in Strategy 2021, the Strategy for Tableau will be removed from the Community Connectors and the independent version will be the only supported version of Strategy for Tableau. You will still be able to use the other connectors that are a part of the Community Connectors.

What should I do if I want to use the latest Strategy for Tableau on Strategy 2020 or older environments?

Starting in Strategy 2021 Update 2, Strategy for Tableau requires a Java 11 environment. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to Strategy 2021 Update 2 or a later version.
If you require assistance in upgrading your Strategy version, please contact Strategy Support.
