Caitlin Corrigan

Senior Education Developer • Strategy

This article describes a defect in MicroStrategy Web 10.x Data Import when users select the Connect Live option to connect to a Snowflake database.

SYMPTOM:
Users that select a Snowflake Database Instance for Data Import see the following error when adding attributes to the grid:

ka02R000000kV2aQAE_0EM44000000QDSg.png

Sample Error Message:
“QueryEngine encountered error: Execute Query failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. [42000:1003: on SQLHANDLE] SQL compilation error: syntax error line 1 at position 39 unexecpted 'Date'.. Error in Process method of Component: QueryEngineServer, xxx, Error Code= -2147212544)”
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create a Database Instance for a Snowflake database using the Snowflake connector.
  2. In Strategy Web, select the option to Add External Data and then select Database (do not select the type of database).
  3. Select Build a Query on the next window and select Next.
  4. Select the Snowflake Database Instance created in the first step.
  5. Select an available Table Name Space and Table.
  6. Add the entire table and select Prepare Data.
  7. Choose Connect Live in next Window and save the cube.
  8. Select Create Dashboard on the following screen and move the an attribute from the Dataset into the Rows.

CAUSE:
The SQL syntax generated for the Live Connect query is incorrect for Snowflake databases.
ACTION:
Currently this issue is still being reviewed for feasibility by our Technology team and it is not scoped for any upcoming scheduled Strategy release.
WORKAROUND:
Use the In-memory Dataset option instead of Connect Live.
