KB028758: Very slow response time on the ODBC call SQLColumns with the Google BigQuery ODBC Driver in MicroStrategy 10.4 - 10.6

Community Admin

• Strategy

This technical note describes an issue in which very slow response times is observed when a SQLColumns ODBC call is issued to a table in Google BigQuery

In Strategy versions, 10.4 - 10.6, very slow response times may be observed when an SQLColumns ODBC call is issued to a table in Google BigQuery.   In some cases the call can take over 30 seconds to complete, causing the application to appear busy or hung.  This behavior may be noticed when using the Warehouse Catalog in Strategy Developer or Data Import in Strategy Web, for example.

CAUSE
This behavior is caused by a known issue in the Strategy Google BigQuery ODBC Driver version 2.0.1.1004 that is provided out-of-the-box in Strategy 10.5 - 10.6. This issue is also seen with the 10.4 Google Big Query driver update version 2.0.1.1004 which was previously provided here.
ACTION
An updated Strategy Google BigQuery ODBC Driver that corrects this issue (version 2.0.8.1015) is provided in Strategy 10.7.  For Strategy version 10.4 still using the older driver, the updated driver and installation instructions may be downloaded directly from the MicroStrategy Data source connectors website.

To determine which version of the driver is currently installed in a Windows environment, check the Drivers tab in the Windows 64-bit ODBC Administrator utility:

To determine which version of the driver is currently installed in a Linux/UNIX environment, check the gbqdriver_version.txt file in the <MSTR_INSTALL>/lib folder.  Prior to version 2.0.8.1015 of the driver, this file did not exist.

The Strategy internal reference number for the issue described in this Technical Note is DE52226.
