How to manually resolve the web server name using the Windows hosts file

When configuring a Strategy Web Server, users may encounter issues with server name resolution. When they attempt to ping the web server, they receive an "Unknown Host" error, as shown below:

This may relate to external problems associated with the Domain Name Server (DNS). In Windows, the name resolution of Strategy Web Server can be accomplished locally using the hosts file. On Windows 95/98/ME the "hosts" file is located in the "c:\windows" directory and on Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003, in the "c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc" directory. Using the hosts file will eliminate the local machine's dependence on the DNS to resolve the web server name.

To manually add the web server to the hosts file, use the syntax shown below:
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
#
# IPAddress ServerName
#
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.15.51.142 mywebserver
Note: Only one server should be listed per line, using the IP address followed by the web server name.

The web server can now be resolved, as illustrated below:

CAUTION:
Modifying the HOSTS file on a machine incorrectly can interfere with name resolution. Ensure that a backup copy is made of the HOSTS file before modifications are made.
