KB10243: How to change the Mapping Method of an Attribute Form from Automatic to Manual using the MicroStrategy 9.x Server SDK

Community Admin

• Strategy

It is possible to programmatically toggle this setting using the Server SDK. To achieve this, perform the following steps.

Each Form of an attribute has a setting called 'Mapping Method'. When this is set to Automatic, the attribute form will automatically have access to every column with the same name in every table associated with the project. If this setting is 'Manual,' then the user can select which tables this attribute should have access to. It is possible to programmatically toggle this setting using the Server SDK. To achieve this, perform the following steps:

  1. Declare the variables:

    Dim strAttributeID as String
    Dim MySource as IDSSSource
    Dim MySession as IDSSSession
    Dim oInfo as IDSSObjectInfo
    Dim oAttribute As IDSSAttribute
    Dim oPGroup As IDSSPropertyGroup
    Dim oPSet As IDSSPropertySet
    Dim oProp As IDSSProperty
    Dim strPropName As String
    Dim strPropValue As Variant
    Dim oDomDoc As New DOMDocument
    Dim oNodeList As IXMLDOMNodeList
    Dim oNodeMap As IXMLDOMNamedNodeMap
    Dim myNode As IXMLDOMNode
    Dim Node1 As IXMLDOMNode
    Dim Node2 As IXMLDOMNode
    Dim r As Integer

  2. Retrieve the following attribute object:

    Please Note: For simplicity, only one attribute is being modified in this example. It is possible to run this on all attributes in the project. To do this, you must first create an object of type IDSSSearch to return all attributes in the project. Next, create a For loop that will iterate through the entire collection of attributes. This For loop should contain all code from steps 3 to 6. For instructions on how to create the search object please reference KB6100-7X0-0094 - "How to search an object in Strategy SDK 7.x"

    strAttributeID = "8D679D4811D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4"
    Set MySource = MySession.Component(DssRoleObjectSource)
    Set oAttribute = MySource.FindObject(strAttributeID, DssTypeAttribute)

  3. This information is stored as a property set which is available from the IDSSObjectInfo Interface:

    Set oInfo = oAttribute.Info
    Set oPGroup = oInfo.PropertySets

  4. Create a for loop to iterate through all property sets to find the "Expressions'" node:

    For Each oPSet In oPGroup
    If oPSet.Info.Name ="Expressions" Then

  5. The return type of this property will be in XML format. This value can be loaded into an XMLDOM Document where it can be parsed and the value changed:

    oDomDoc.async = false
    oDomDoc.loadXML (oProp.Value)
    oDomDoc.Validate

    Set oNodeList = oDomDoc.getElementsByTagName("E")
    For r = 0 To oNodeList.Length - 1 Step 1
    Set oNodeMap = oNodeList.Item(r).Attributes
    Set Node1 = oNodeMap.getNamedItem("MM")
    oDomDoc.getElementsByTagName("E").Item(r).Attributes.getNamedItem("MM").nodeValue = 2
    Next

    Complete the outer For loop and save the object:

    oProp.Value = oDomDoc.xml
    oAttribute.Info.Save
    End If
    Next oPSet
