KB10269: How are ‘This week’ dynamic dates resolved in MicroStrategy Developer?

How are ‘This week’ dynamic dates resolved in MicroStrategy Developer?

The resolution of dynamic 'This week' qualifications in Strategy Developer is carried out according to the US and UK convention whereby a week is considered to run from Sunday to Saturday. This may present a problem to users in regions where other conventions prevail; for example, in much of Continental Europe, the week is based on a Monday to Sunday week.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Follow the steps below to reproduce this issue using the Strategy Tutorial project:

  • In the Microsoft Windows control panel, set the local machine date to a Sunday (e.g., 20 June 2004).
  • Open the filter editor in Strategy Developer to create a new filter.
  • Create filter on ID of DAY to open the Date Editor.
  • Select 'This week.'
  • Select Monday. Notice the dynamic date resolves to 21 June 2004 (i.e., after 'today's' date), as shown below:

  • Close Strategy Developer and re-set the Windows date to a weekday (e.g., Thurs 24 June 2004).
  • Re-open Strategy Developer and repeat Steps 2-5.

If Monday is selected, the dynamic date resolves to 21 June 2004, i.e., before 'today's' date, as illustrated below:

WORKAROUND:
To work around this issue, the user should define the dynamic date filter in a way which is not sensitive to local conventions regarding the first day of the week. The exact nature of the filter will depend on the user's requirements. One possibility, for example, would be to use a 'Today - n days' type expression in the filter definition.
