KB10533: Duplicate emails are delivered from a clustered MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server system.

Users notice that duplicate email are being delivered from a clustered MicroStrategy Narrowcast system

SYMPTOM:
Users notice that duplicate email are being delivered from a clustered Strategy Narrowcast system. This issue occurs when the following two conditions exist:

  • Multiple copies of email are being delivered by a clustered Strategy Narrowcast System.
  • The Narrowcast Logs (DELogs) show all clustered Distribution Managers actively starting and seeing the same services to completion.

:1500:Srvc ID Exec ID Segment ID Assigning to Execution Engine "FMSIDS024" for execution (not backed-up): Service ID Execution ID Segment ID

Note that in this case, both Distribution Managers (PRIMDM01, SECDM02) have kicked off the same service (0C06EA30C52745F7BE12F9B709F7C99B) at about the same time (2004-09-10 07:33:18.704, 2004-09-10 07:33:24.828); thus, both are functioning as Primary Distribution Managers and are delivering the same content twice.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs because both Distribution Managers are acting as a Primary Distribution Manager. The only time when two Primary Distribution Managers can exist simultaneously is when the Primary and Secondary Distribution Managers lose communication with each other and the following registry key in the Secondary Distribution Manager has a value of 'localhost:'
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\Strategy Broadcast Server\7.0\DistributionManager\HostListForNetworkConnectionCheck

ACTION:
Perform the following steps to ensure that the Secondary Distribution Manager relinquishes primary status once the original Distribution Manager has been detected by the system:

  1. Change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\MicroStrategy\Strategy Broadcast Server\7.0\DistributionManager\HostListForNetworkConnectionCheck value on both Distribution Managers from 'localhost' to the name or IP address of a corporate machine that is most likely up 100% of the time, such as an internal mail server or a web server.
  2. Re-start the Strategy Distribution Manager service on both Distribution Manager machines for these changes to take effect.
