KB10546: When changing the machine name or IP address, which alterations should be made so that MicroStrategy Narrowcast Delivery Engine and Subscription Portal 9.2.x and above are not affected?

Community Admin

• Strategy

Making changes to machine names must be done with extreme care. If the correct modifications are not taken with Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.2.x and above, both the Delivery Engine and the Subscription Portal could be affected.

Thus, after changing the name of a machine, the Administrator should make manual changes in the following places:

  • System Configuration Wizard on the Narrowcast Console

When opening the System Configuration, go to Clustering and first choose to 'Remove all machines from the Narrowcast Server machine.' Then, click 'Next.'

Click on the 'Back' button and again in the 'Select Configuration Options,' check either of the options to 'Select and configure machines for the Narrowcast Server System.' Depending on the environment, users must select to configure a single machine or multiple machines:

  •

When specifying the name of the machine after clicking on 'Next,' include the new machine name where appropriate (i.e., Distribution Manager, Execution Engine, Logging Server, Subscription Engine and/or JData Server):

  • .properties files used by Subscription Portal

Step 1 addresses the change of machine names on the property files. However, it is important to double-check the content on the files below to ensure they are no longer pointing to the old machine name.

Verify the following files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\Config if they exist:

    • admin.properties
    • DBDriver.properties
    • logger.properties
    • TE.properties
    • tnxbridge.properties
    • subscriptionapi.properties
  • If any of these files still make reference to the old machine name, manually change it to point to the new machine name.

Note: Back up the .properties files before making any changes and restart all Strategy Subscription Services after making changes to the property file.

  • Portal Administrator

On the Portal Administrator, verify if the name of the Subscription Engine Location has been changed to the new machine name by going to the System Configuration session and clicking on the 'Subscription Engine Location.' If the machine name is still shown as the old name, manually change it to the new name and click 'Next':

  • Strategy Web Administrator

In case the System has Web Deliveries enabled, the machine name must also be changed for the Strategy Web Administrator page. When opening the page, click on the Narrowcast Server Menu on the red toolbar. In order to change the machine name for the Subscription Engine Location, click on the modify button, change the machine name, and click 'Save.' Restart all Strategy Subscription Services as well as IIS.

  • After updating the machine name in all of the locations mentioned above, Strategy Narrowcast Server should function properly.

Note: If Strategy Narrowcast Server is configured in a clustered environment, it is very likely that the Administrator will not need to make all of the changes above, since the machine name will change for only one or two of the machines that compose Strategy Narrowcast Server and not all of them.
