KB10688: How to create a dynamic custom group based on prompted values

Stefan Zepeda

This article explains how to create a dynamic custom group based on prompted values.

Suppose a user would like to calculate Revenue for USA and England together as well as the remaining revenue from all other available countries. Furthermore, the user would like to calculate the Revenue for USA and Spain together as well as the remaining revenue from all other available countries.

Creating static custom groups to calculate these values is one solution to this issue. Alternatively, this functionality can be achieved by following the steps outlined below to create dynamic custom groups based on prompted values.

  • Create a filter listing all the available values for that attribute. In this example, work with the attribute 'Country' as shown in the image below:

  • Create a prompt on the attribute 'Country' as shown in the image below:

  • Place that prompt in a new filter as shown in the image below:

  • Create a new filter made of the two previously created filters. Add the filter created in step 1 then add the filter created in step 3 as shown in the image below. It is essential that the condition between the first and second filter is: AND NOT. In order to achieve this, please click on the 'AND' operator and toggle to 'AND NOT'. This will list all the countries, except those that have been selected in the first prompt.

  • Create a new custom group. The first element will be the filter that was created in step 3. The second element will be the filter that was created in step 4.

  • Edit the name of the custom group elements as shown in the image below:

  • Insert the custom group in a report along with a metric.

  • Execute the report. The report results should looks as follows:
