KB10813: Users cannot perform an Advanced Sort by a Metric Row without breaking the order of metrics.

Users cannot perform an Advanced Sort by a Metric Row without breaking the order of metrics

SYMPTOM:
Users cannot perform an Advanced Sort by a Metric Row without breaking the order of metrics. In the example below, created using the Strategy Tutorial project, the attribute Quarter is placed on the report column beneath two metrics. By default, the columns are sorted by metric, and Ascending by quarter within each metric. If an Advanced Sort is added to the report, and Quarter sort is set to Descending, the report column order is altered.
Perform the following steps to reproduce this issue:

  • Create a new empty report in Strategy Tutorial with the following object specifications:
    • Attribute 'Customer State' on the report rows.
    • Metrics 'Units Sold' and 'Revenue' and the attribute 'Quarter' on the report columns.
    • Ensure the attribute 'Quarter' is located beneath the metrics.
  • Within each metric, 'Quarter' is displayed in a descending sort order:

  • In Advanced Sorting, on the column, select sort 'Ascending' by Quarter ID, as shown below:

  • The report column is now displayed in an Ascending sort order by Quarter ID, but the metric order is broken. However, notice the attribute Quarter is no longer displayed sorted-by each metric:

CAUSE:
The order of the metrics is broken and the columns are no longer sorted by metric, and by quarter within each metric. Removing the Advanced Sort restores the previous display but the attributes default sort order is applied (Ascending). There is no functionality presently available to change the attribute sort within the report.
This is a known issue logged with Strategy.

ACTION:
Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.

WORKAROUND:
To workaround this issue, change the default sort at the attribute level. Note that this could impact the display of any report that uses this attribute:

  1. Remove the advanced sorting (Data > Advanced sorting > Remove).
  2. Right-click on 'Quarter' in the report, and select Edit.
  3. In the Attribute forms, right-click on the form ID, and select Modify.
  4. In the Attribute (ID) Modify Attribute form, under Form Format, change the Default Sort to Ascending.
Note: This change is not report specific, and could affect the display of any report using this attribute.
  5. Select OK. Save and Close the attribute.
  6. Update the schema.
  7. Re-execute the report.

The report column is now sorted by metric, and within each metric, 'Quarter' is displayed in an ascending sort order:
