KB11063: How to set up SAP connectivity with the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x on Windows, using JCo 2.x connector files.

Community Admin

• Strategy

Prerequisites for SAP BI connectivity
Strategy requires the following three files to be installed on the Strategy Intelligence Server machine, when using JCo 2.x connector files. These files are proprietary to SAP and must be obtained from the download area of the SAP Service Marketplace (https://service.sap.com).

  • sapjco.jar
  • sapjcorfc.dll
  • librfc32.dll

These libraries may also require the Visual Studio .NET C/C++ runtime libraries on Windows platforms.

NOTE: In Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.0.x environments running under a 64-bit Windows operating system, users should install the 32-bit Windows version of JCo 2.x.

NOTE: If SAP BI systems are to be accessed using a two-tier project source in Strategy Desktop, the SAP libraries must be installed on the Desktop machines as well.

NOTE: Users wishing to retrieve large amounts of data from SAP data source should JCo 3.x connector files. For more information, refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document:

KB16109 (KB5200-8X-2348): "JCO_ERROR_CONVERSION: Integer "1003407" has to many digits at field END_CELL" error occurs when executing a large report against a SAP BW data source in Strategy Engine 8.1.x - 9.0.2 Hotfix 3

Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge Base document on how to setup connectivity to SAP BW using JCo 3.x connector files.

TN 38435: How to setup SAP BW connectivity with Strategy Intelligence Server 9.0.2 - 9.2.x running on Windows, using JCo 3.x connectors.

Strategy uses an additional Java executable, JCO.jar, as the bridge between the Strategy database connection process and SAP's Java Connector. JCO.jar is installed as part of the normal Strategy installation under Program Files\Common Files\Strategy.

For information about setting up SAP connectivity for Intelligence Server Universal please refer to the following Tech Note:

KB13302: How to set up SAP BW connectivity with Strategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x

Configuration of the Strategy system environment
Perform the following steps to prepare the Strategy Intelligence Server machine for SAP BI connectivity.

  1. Ensure that the location of sapjcorfc.dll and librfc32.dll is included in the system's Path environment variable. Use My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and edit Path. (The Strategy installer automatically adds Program Files\Common Files\Strategy to the Path variable. If the three SAP libraries are placed into the Strategy Common Files folder, the location will already be in the Path and the step may be omitted.)

  2. Configure the location of JCO.jar and sapjco.jar in the Windows Registry, under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\JNI Bridge\Configuration\JVM ClassPath\JDBCBridge. The default value, set by the Strategy installer, is as follows. There should be no need to change the path of JCO.jar. If sapjco.jar is in another location, edit the value to provide the right path.

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicroStrategy\jco.jar;C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicroStrategy\sapjco.jar

  3. (Optional) Strategy requires access to a Java Virtual Machine DLL. A Java runtime environment is installed by the Strategy installer, and the location of its jvm.dll is automatically populated into the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicroStrategy\JNI Bridge\Configuration\JavaVM Path. Normally there should be no need to modify this path; however, if the system administrator prefers to use another JVM version, the location may be configured here.

Database Instance configuration for SAP BI
This is comparable to the Database Instance definition for SQL databases.

  • Create a new database instance. In the Database Instance editor, set the "Database connection type" to "SAP BW," as shown below. (Strategy 9.0.1 and later distinguishes between SAP BW 3.x and SAP BW 7.x.)

  • Define a new database connection and database login using the connection details specific to the environment. The following is just a sample. Use the parameters provided by the SAP system administrator.

  • Ensure that the "JCO;" is indicated as an additional string parameter. Strategy Desktop should populate the connection string with "JCO;" but it may need to be supplied manually.

Troubleshooting
Consult the following Strategy Knowledgebase document if a connectivity error appears when trying to access the SAP system.
