KB11140: What is the DSSErrors.log, how does it work and where is it located for MicroStrategy Intelligence Server?

Introduction
The DSSErrors.log is the main error log recorded by the Strategy Intelligence Server.This log file is typically the first log file that should be examined when troubleshooting an issue with Strategy Intelligence Server.
 
How does DSSErrors logging work?
The default Maximum File Size limit for DSSErrors.log is 2048 KB. When the file is first created it is called DSSErrors.log.
 
When this file reaches is Maximum File Size limit it gets renamed to DSSErrors.log.bak and a new DSSError.log file is created.
 
This new DSSErrors.log logs the most current/recent information. Once this second DSSErrors.log reaches its maximum limit, it is renamed again to DSSErrors.log.bak; thereby overwriting the previous DSSErrors.log.bak. And the process continues...
 
DSSErrors.log Location on Windows
If Strategy Intelligence Server is running on a Microsoft Windows x32 machine, then the default location of the DSSErrors.log is:
 

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Strategy\Log

 
If Strategy Intelligence Server is running on a Microsoft Windows x64 machine, then the default location of the DSSErrors.log is:
 
 

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Strategy\Log

  
DSSErrors.log Location on Unix
If Strategy Intelligence Server Universal is running on a Unix machine, then the default location of the DSSErrors.log will depend on the Log Path specified during installation. The Log Path can be located by looking in the install.log file, which should contain entries similar to the following:
 

Target Directories :

Home Path : /var/opt/Strategy

Install Path : /opt/Strategy

Log Path : /var/log/Strategy

Strategy Web Universal Install Directory : /opt/Strategy/WebUniversal

Application Server Deploy Directory : /opt/Strategy/WebUniversal

Strategy SDK Install Path : /opt/Strategy/SDK

 
In the example above, the Log Path is /var/log/Strategy.
 
The DSSErrors.log, generated by Strategy Intelligence Server, is located in the Log Path folder specified during installation as seen in the snippet above.
