"Could not connect to the selected project: The connection failed. Possible causes are a) Server is not running, b) Server is loading project, c) Network problem, or d) Server reached maximum connection limit" when logging in.

Symptom

Users receive the following error message when attempting to connect to a project source through Strategy Office:

Could not connect to the selected project: The connection failed. Possible causes are a) Server is not running, b) Server is loading project, c) Network problem, or d) Server reached maximum connection limit.
They are unable to connect as any user or as the administrator. However, the same users are successfully able to connect to Strategy Intelligence Server through Developer and Web.

Cause

In addition to the possible causes listed in the error message itself, another instance where this issue could occur is when there is a mistake within the configuration of Strategy Office. A problem with the configuration might prevent users from being able to pull projects from the Intelligence Server.

Action

In order to verify that the configuration is correct, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Configuration for Strategy Office. This can be found by going to Start > Programs >Strategy > Office > Configuration. Adjust the Web Services URL to match the following format:

    http://(web-server-machine-name)/StrategyWS/MSTRWS.asmx

  2. From the Web server machine, locate the file called projectsources.xml. It is located at C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Web Services\projectsources.xml. Once this file has been opened, locate the connection information for that project source. It will appear similar to the following:
    -->
    - <ProjectSources>
    - <ProjectSource>
    <ProjectSourceName>Strategy Tutorial</ProjectSourceName>
    <ServerName>localhost</ServerName>
    <AuthMode>MWSStandard</AuthMode>
    <PortNumber>0</PortNumber>
    <MaxPooledConnections>100</MaxPooledConnections>
    </ProjectSource>

  3. Change the 'ServerName' to match the server name that is being used to access the project from Strategy Desktop in a 3-tier connection.
  4. Restart IIS.

Once the web server has been restarted, users will be able to connect to the project source and retrieve the projects available on the the Intelligence Server.
