KB11360: "Operation must use an updateable query" error message appears when attempting to connect to a project source pointing to the shipped Microsoft Access metadata in MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager

"Operation must use an updateable query" error message appears when attempting to connect to a project source pointing to the shipped Microsoft Access metadata in MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager.

The Enterprise Manager metadata is shipped as a Microsoft Access database called EM_Proj_MD.mdb. It is installed by default in the Program Files\MicroStrategy\Enterprise Manager\Administrator folder. During the initialization step from the Strategy Enterprise Manager console, the Enterprise Manager project is duplicated from the shipped Access metadata into the certified metadata repository that will be used for the Enterprise Manager environment.

Users create a 2-tier project source pointing to the shipped Access metadata. Upon attempting to connect to this project source, the following error message appears:

ka04W00000148MfQAI_0EM440000002Bl5.gif

Database error <>: Execute Query failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. Operation must use an updateable query.
The reason for this error is that the EM_Proj_MD.mdb file is marked as a Read-only file. To verify this, right-click on the file and go to Properties > General, as shown below:

ka04W00000148MfQAI_0EM440000002Bl8.gif

Therefore, queries involving SELECT are possible against the database but not queries involving INSERT or UPDATE.

While it is possible to resolve this error by un-checking the Read-only box for the EM_Proj_MD.mdb file, this file has been intentionally marked as Read-only. This is to prevent any changes from being made to it. The shipped Access metadata is not intended for use directly without actually moving it to the metadata repository that is being used for the Enterprise Manager environment.
