KB11537: What are the startup types for the MicroStrategy Narrowcast Distribution Manager and Execution Engine?

This article discusses the startup types for the MicroStrategy Narrowcast Distribution Manager and Execution Engine services.

The Strategy Narrowcast Server Delivery Engine is in charge of extracting, formatting and delivering content. Additionally, it is made up of the following two services:

  • Strategy Distribution Manager - controls the Execution Engine
  • Strategy Execution Engine - performs the actual service execution

To be able to carry out the correct functionality, the above two services must be set to their default Startup type of:

  • Strategy Distribution Manager - Manual
  • Strategy Execution Engine - Manual

NOTE: The Strategy Distribution Manager has a specific behavior such that when it is stopped, its startup type will default to Manual, but as soon as it is started, it will become Automatic. The Execution Engine should not be set to Automatic, as it is only to start up on a command from the Distribution Manager. Configuring the Execution Engine as Automatic may lead to erratic Narrowcast Server behavior.
