Article outlines an issue whereby popular MicroStrategy tools such as License Manager, Service Manager, Service Center, Diagnostics Configuration, ODBC Test Tool and JDBC Test Tool may not open upon clicking their shortcut icons.

SYMPTOM:
The user attempting to launch the particular Strategy tool from the Start menu does not see the dialog box, and there are no error messages written into the Microsoft event viewer.
CAUSE:
The cause for this issue appears to be an issue with the default java runtime environment distributed by Microsoft as part of the Operating System and the Strategy application.

ACTION:
This issue can be resolved by performing the following steps:

  • Determine if the Java runtime environment is installed on the machine by checking the Add/Remove Program list in the Control Panel.
  • If Java is not installed, download and install the latest version of the runtime environment from from the following web site:
    http://www.java.com/en/download
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Run the the application from the command line. An example to launch the License Manager is shown below:

  • javaw.exe -jar MALicMgr.jar

If the previous steps do not resolve the issue, perform the following:

  • Navigate to the item in the Start menu and right-click on the License Manager icon, as shown below, and select Properties.
  • Edit the command shortcut so that the javaw executable from the system path is executed. An example for the License Manager utility is shown below:

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe -jar C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~2\MALicMgr.jar
