“Login failed for user 'XXXXX'” error message appears in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x when executing a report against a SQL Server database in 3-tier.

SYMPTOM:
When executing reports in 3-tier, the following error is returned:

Error: SQL Generation Complete QueryEngine encountered error: Connect failed. Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLDriverConnect. Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed Error in Process method of Component: QueryEngineServer, Project Strategy Tutorial, Job 114, Error Code= -2147212544.P>
If the same reports are executed in 2-tier, no errors are returned.

CAUSE:
This issue may occur when the data warehouse is set up to use NT Authentication for user logins. The Database Login of the Database Instance being used to connect to the data warehouse is also set up to use NT Authentication. This can be verified by performing the following steps:

  • Edit the Database Instance in the Database Instance Manager:

  • Click Modify… to edit the Database Connection, as shown below:

  • Click Modify… to edit the Database Login:

  • Verify whether the option Use network login id (Windows authentication) is selected:

When this configuration is used, the Intelligence Server will attempt to connect as the user that is running the mstrsvr.exe process. It does not login as the user currently logged into the machine. By default, this process is started as the machine's SYSTEM account. This is a local low-level user account that cannot be logged into directly. If the SYSTEM account, or the account running the Intelligence Server process, cannot authenticate to the data warehouse, then the connection attempt will be unsuccessful.

ACTION:
Start the Intelligence Server as a user that can authenticate against the data warehouse by performing the following:

  • Select Start >Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services:
