Strategy Narrowcast Server enables portal service designers to gather subscription information from the subscription portal and store it in a warehouse table rather than exclusively storing the information in the subscription book. Attributes pointing to this table lend a new flexibility to dynamic subscription services. With a write-back table implementation, a dynamic subscription table will be maintained through the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x Subscription Portal which means that an administrator does not have to input each subscription through SQL tools or other customized interfaces.
 
This technical note demonstrates how to create a personalized report execution (PRE) dynamic subscription service with a write-back table setup.
 
To create needed components, there are four major parts:

  1. Create a dynamic subscription table in the warehouse.
  2. Create attributes mapping to the dynamic subscription table in the metadata.
  3. Enable dynamic subscription service for the information source in the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x repositories.
  4. Configure the Strategy Narrowcast Server 9.x subscription portal to use the write-back feature.

Part 1:
Create a table in the warehouse (WH_SUBSCRIPTIONS) that contains information about each subscription. The table should have the following columns:

Part 2:

  • Import the table created in Part 1 by the warehouse catalog.
  • Create attributes for each column.

  • Create a dynamic subscription report and put all the above attributes in the page-by section of this report.

  • Create a prompted report as the content to be delivered.

In this case, the report contains Year and Region attributes and Revenue metric. The report is prompted to choose from all elements of the attribute Region.
 
Part 3:

  • Launch Strategy Narrowcast Server Administrator console.
  • Navigate to the information source and configure to support dynamic subscription.
    Note: there are two major ways to create a subscription information object. The user can choose from the information source or a report returning dynamic subscription information. This document uses the later one.
     
     
    • Launch the Information Source Wizard and proceed until the dynamic subscription option displays, as shown below:

    • Since there are only four attributes are created, map each ID form to applicable section (there is no section for "Subscription Set ID"):
       
      Note: for the rest of the subscription information (ex. Locale ID, Address display), the user can choose to retrieve from the subscription book repository or apply a constant. The dynamic subscription configuration in the Information Source Wizard is to give the user flexibility to choose where the subscription information comes from when creating a subscription information object. For example, if "Locale ID" is only configured to "Apply a Constant," then when creating a subscription information object, there would be no other option except "Apply a Constant."

    • For "Locale ID", "Address Display", "Physical Address", "Device", "Transmission Properties", "Pin", "Time Zone", "Delivery Window", "Security and Authentication" and "Preference", choose "Retrieve from Subscription Book" at least.
       
    • Confirm all changes and close the wizard.
  • Create a service to be subscribed through the Subscription Portal.
     
    • Create a subscription information object mapping to the subscription report created in Part 1 step 3.

    • Choose "Retrieve from Subscription Book" for all items under "User Properties and Personalization" window:

    • Create a subscription set object using the subscription information object created in the previous step.<
    • Create a service and choose the content report created in Part1 step 4. And also choose the subscription set created above.

Part 4:

  • Launch the Portal Administrator. Go to "Service Configuration" on the top menu.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • Navigate to the service created in Part 3 step 3. Then click Next.

  • Click Next again to skip static subscription sets settings.

  • Click Next to skip configure additional questions.
  • Select the database tables where the subscription information will be stored. If the user does not see the database connection listed, click on "Add a new database connection." Once the database connection is selected, click on "Refresh" and select the warehouse table where the subscription information will be stored:

  • Drag and drop the matching components to the table:

  • Click Next and finish all the configuration.

Once all above steps are performed, the user is able to subscribe to the service and perform a write-back to the subscription table in the warehouse. The user can verify the feature by subscribing the service and run the subscription report and check if there is any data return. If not, re-examine the above steps or contact Strategy Technical Support for further assistance.
